CHICAGO – Area gas prices are in line with the national average, and more than a dollar a gallon less than a year ago. According to AAA, LaSalle County, as of Wednesday, has the area’s lowest average gas price for a gallon of regular unleaded, at $1.79 a gallon. That is also the average price for the country as a whole, and 14 cents cheaper than the Illinois average. That’s a dramatic reduction from May 6th a year ago, in which Illinois’s gas prices were one dollar and eighteen cents higher Economist credit the lower prices in part due to reduced travel because of the Coronavirus. .
