Streator officials discuss annexation meetings

STREATOR — Streator city officials met yesterday to discuss the recent annexation meetings for two areas of the city. At the latest Committee of the Whole Meeting, City Manager Scot Wrighton said annexation petitions have been slow to return to the city. The city is looking for a majority of petitions from the two sides of the city showing a favor of annexation before they can move ahead with the annexation. Wrighton said the southeast side is just six shy of doing so, while the northwest side of town is 54 short. Officials say their goal over the next 60 days is to get residents in both neighborhoods to respond, whether it is a yes or no answer.
If the city does not receive enough responses, Wrighton said the city could move in a direction where officials just need to show that more than half of the residents in either neighborhood are dumping sewage into the mines. Officials say if this can be proven, then the city can annex the neighborhoods without the annexation petitions.
