UTICA – The Utica Fire Department were called to Ottawa Canyon at Starved Rock State Park on Wednesday for the report of a brush fire. According to park authorities, two men allegedly built a campfire in one of the sandstone outcrops off the trail. There were no reported injuries and officials are reminding visitors that no campfires are allowed anywhere at either Starved Rock or Matthiessen State Parks unless you are camping at the Starved Rock Campground and the fire is in the appropriate fire ring and grate. Tuesday and Wednesday the area was under a “Red Flag Warning”, which means a burn ban on all fires including campfires in the campground.
