Streator Parks Board recommends multiple areas for butterfly gardens

Signage proposed at butterfly gardens

STREATOR – More insect pollinators will soon be making the city of Streator home. Streator’s Park and Open Spaces Board is recommending multiple pollinator gardens around town, all thanks to butterfly enthusiast Nina Vaughn. On Thursday the board will recommend to Streator’s City Council the following areas: the left side of the entranceway to the canoe launch, an area north of Marilla Park, the area between the east side of Streator’s levee near the Vermillion River, and an area west of Streator’s Incubator near Hopalong Park. There’s also potential for the lot of Hopalong Cassidy River Trail. Plans for these locations include prairie grass, wildflowers, and buckwheat fields. Vaughn says the more places in Streator that can be registered as Monarch Waystations, the better.
