OTTAWA – The city of Ottawa will obtain the last portion of land that was once a part of the superfund cleanup sites. On Tuesday night council approved an agreement with the Diocese of Peoria to swap parcels of land with the city, in order to expand and update St. Columba Catholic Church. In exchange, the diocese has agreed to donate a parcel of land located near the Marquette Football Field on Guion Street. Ottawa Mayor Dan Aussem says the exchange gives the city an opportunity to sign an environmental covenant with the EPA that limits digging to 4ft deep due to contamination. He says that will be the last piece of the superfund site, removing the city of Ottawa from the EPA’s online list. Ideas are already brewing as to how the parcel of land will be used.
The city will have to wait for the EPA on final approval for the land.
