Employers get tips from OSF and LaSalle County State’s Attorney on drug policies in lieu of marijuana legislation

STREATOR – Employers in Illinois are faced with new hurdles in the workplace. Come January, 1st marijuana will be legal for recreational use, changing the way employers handle their drug policies. On Friday morning, at OSF Center for Health in Streator, health officials and LaSalle County State’s Attorney Karen Donnelly led a panel discussion to employers on how to go about updating their drug policies uniquely to the standards of their business.

“You have to follow all drug testing procedures that are spelled out clearly, the employee is aware of them and before you impose discipline, Illinois law does require an employer to give the employees a reasonable opportunity to contest for basis of any actions you take against them,” Donnelly said.

Donnelly also went over reasonable suspicion, a test given to employees who are reasonably suspected by a trained supervisor and an additional concurring manager of substance abuse. Indicators or signs of impairment are, lack of motivation, paranoid behavior and slowed reaction time.
