STREATOR – As cooler weather heads our way, more folks will be enjoying the warmth of a bonfire with friends and family. Without proper preparation and some common sense, there could pose a serious risk for an accident. In Streator, special camp fire rules are implemented to ensure safety at all times. According to Streator Fire Lieutenant Bryan Park, for all residents, campfires of any kind can not be bigger than 3 by 3 ft and must be greater than 10 feet from any structure. Dry landscape waste or kindling are the only material that can be used to start a fire. Park says common sense means remembering camp fire must be attended to, no chemicals or accelerants may be used to ignite fires and its very important to keep children and pets a minimum of 3 to 5 ft at bay. After a third warning, Park says the department will generally issue a ticket of an $150 fine.
