City of Streator announces intentions of a Business Improvement District

Map of Business Improvement District

STREATOR –  The city of Streator passed a resolution to create a Business Improvement District. In a special council meeting on Tuesday, the city indicated intentions to create a special district to include Northpoint Plaza and adjacent commercial properties, as part of a development incentive provided to North Point Holdings, LLC. City Manager Scot Wrighton says the Business Improvement District allows for the city to create special taxes that only apply within the district, no increase in property taxes per the developers request but a 1% sales tax and potentially an entertainment tax. The proceeds collected from and in the district would be used in part to fund the Hilton Tru hotel project and other improvements. Wrighton says he is not certain on how much the district could generate because it is unknown what kinds of businesses could occupy the district.
