SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, is recognizing the importance of law enforcement both at the local and state level throughout Illinois during National Police Week. Police Week is an observance that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty.

“Police officers and their families give so much in service to our communities, and too many lay down their lives in their duty to keep us safe,” said Yednock. “We cannot begin to repay the debt we owe these heroes and their families. But we can work together to get them the support and resources they need, as they work to protect our communities here in Illinois.”

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington D.C. to participate in a number of planned events, while cities throughout the nation hold ceremonies or events to recognize members of law enforcement.

“We should always recognize the important, and often thankless, job that our police officers do to help keep us safe,” said Yednock. “Those who chose a career in law enforcement deserve the utmost respect. Too often, law enforcement doesn’t receive the thanks that they deserve which is why I encourage everyone to thank and show their appreciation to our police officers during this week and always.”
