Streator Pushes to Ban Sweepstakes Machines

STREATOR – The city of Streator is pushing for a ban on non-licensed video gambling also known as sweepstakes machines. In a council meeting earlier this week, council agreed to draft an ordinance to ban the machines. The profits from the non-licensed machines stay with the business and the machine vendors, whereas licensed machines pay 25 percent of profits to state, and 5 percent to local governments. Streator City Manager Scot Wrighton says the proposal for the ban came about from findings of sweepstakes machines in the city of Chicago and Chicago suburbs with some institutions not licensed for gambling machines. Wrighton says its not fair to businesses that play by the rules, and will begin evaluating the right ordinance language and appropriate legal measures to take so that there can be an ordinance to vote on in January.
