Rabies found in Leland Bat

By: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Region

OTTAWA – Warm weather brings more activity to bat populations in Illinois, and with that the greater chance of an encounter of one with rabies. Bats are the primary carriers of rabies in Illinois, and a bat from Leland recently tested positive for the disease. The LaSalle County Health Department says that 29 bats have tested positive for rabies this year, and one should never handle a bat they find on the ground unable to fly or out during the daytime.
