“Its going to be a challenge” Streator’s City Manager to propose ways to finance police and fire pensions

STREATOR – Streator’s city council and department heads discussed 2020 budgets at Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting. Department heads had the opportunity to propose increases of funding to certain areas of their budget like for vehicles and equipment for both the police and fire departments. A major concern for Streator like many cities in Illinois is their police and fire pensions. Under state law, downstate police and fire pension systems must achieve a funding ratio of 90% by 2040. According to City Manager David Plyman the fire department’s pension is under 30% funded.

City manager David Plyman and Major Jimmie Lansford will review the budget and reconvene for a second meeting next week Thursday at 10 a.m.
