SENECA — Hundreds of people from surrounding communities were on hand at Seneca High School Thursday night for a hearing on the Great Lakes Basin railroad. Officials from the Surface Transportation Board were on hand, giving a 30-minute presentation about the proposed rail line, then took comments from the public, which lasted several hours. Many state and local officials were on hand including Senator Sue Rezin, La Salle County Farm Bureau President Monty Whipple, and former Illinois Department of Ag Director Phillip Nelson, whom all spoke against the project. Concerns voiced during the meeting included spillage of hazardous material, train derailment, loss of acreage, water drainage and pollution.
The Great Lakes Basin project is a 278-mile rail line proposed to stretch from Janesville, Wisconsin to La Porte, Indiana, passing through areas of Lee, La Salle and Grundy Counties.
