Hemp Cultivation on 2018 Federal Farm Bill

By: Make it Kenya

SPRINGFIELD – The Senate voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to pass the new Farm Bill, voting 87-13. According to LaSalle County Farm Bureau President David Isermann, while the bill is yet to be ratified, a compromise from the Senate and the House Agriculture Committees added the legalization of cultivating industrial hemp as a part of the bill. U.S Senator Mitch McConnell supports the cultivation and sale of the plant, adding it to the legislation his Hemp Farming Act Bill that was released earlier this year. The legalization would essentially remove industrial hemp from the Controlled Substance Act. Isermann believes that there will be some hemp grown in Illinois, however he says that cultivating the plant would be a better fit for the climate of southern states.
