SUMMARY:Ottawa Police Benevolent & Protective Association * Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Police Benevolent & Protective Association Unit #18 will be conducting their annual fundraising effort.  As in the past\, they will promote their fundraising drive with a Back to School Shopping project in mid August.  This special project is designed to provide the less fortunate children who attend school within our community with basic items needed to attend school.\nThe Ottawa PB & PA Back to School project is aimed to promote positive relations amongst the youth and officers of the agency.  Each year during our Back to School Shopping Program they aim to take as many children shopping as possible.  Each child they take receives $100 and the opportunity to be accompanied by a Police Officer while shopping for essential school supplies at the Ottawa Wal-Mart Store.\n100% of the proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will benefit the community and support the Ottawa PB & PA Unit #18’s Back to School Shopping Program and other charitable activities.  These activities include various area youth activities\, general operation activities\, and numerous other charitable projects.\nThe successful efforts of the Ottawa PB & PA are dependent upon the generosity and involvement of the resident and businesses in the community.  Without it\, they would have had a hard time reaching out to the children and the community through the various programs they support with donations.\nDonations can be mailed to the police department or dropped off.  Arrangements can also be made to have the donation picked up at an area residence by contacting either name listed below at the Ottawa Police Department.\nAnyone with questions or concerns can contact the Ottawa Police Department to verify the legitimacy of this fundraiser.\nThank you in advance for all your help.\n \nMarc Hoster\, President\nDave Hallowell\, Vice President\nMatt Najdanovich\, Secretary\nEmail at PBPA18@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Red Cross Bloodmobile * Mendota
DESCRIPTION:The American Red Cross & the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce\nRed Cross Bloodmobile at the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival\nSaturday\, August 12th – Red Cross blood shortage prompts an emergency call for blood donations.\nThe American Red Cross will have their Bloodmobile at Mendota’s 70th Annual Sweet Corn Festival on Saturday\, August 12th.  The Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for eligible blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now and help save lives.  The Bloodmobile will be in Mendota from 9am to 2pm on Saturday of Sweet Corn Festival weekend August 12th at the corner of Indiana Avenue and Jefferson Street downtown.  Blood donations have fallen short of expectations for the past two months\, resulting in about 61\,000 fewer donations than needed and causing a significant draw down of the Red Cross blood supply.\nTo schedule an appointment to donate\, whether it is at Mendota’s 70th Annual Festival or at a bloodmobile visit coming up in your area\, please call 800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767)  The Red Cross has added more than 25\,000 additional slots at donation centers and community blood drives across the country over the next few weeks to accommodate more donors.   Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate.\n \nThe American Red Cross shelters\, feeds\, and provides emotional support to victims of disasters;  supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood;  teaches skills that save lives;  provides international humanitarian aid;  and supports military members and their families.  The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.  For more information\, please visit redcross.org or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

SUMMARY:LaSalle County Genealogy Guild * Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 19th\, The LaSalle County Genealogy Guild will meet at 1pm at the Guild Library\, 115 Glover Street in Ottawa.  The speaker will be Robert Glaser.  He will be speaking about a book he has written “A Fire Straw in Bureau County.”  The Forgotten Utopian Dream of LaMoille’s Rosemont Domain is the unique story of a proposed Utopian community in Illinois in 1843.  This book represents the only comprehensive research study of this overlooked event in our state and regional history.  The proposed community would have been part of an elaborate socio-economic movement intended to be a viable alternative to the emerging system of industrial-capitalism in the early nineteenth century.  A Fire of Straw in Bureau County offers us the opportunity to revisit a time and dream that impacted those currents of change.  With a Masters degree from Illinois State University\, Bob Glaser taught social studies at Walnut High School for over thirty years.  The LaMoille research developed from his work with the historic Galena Trail and Coach Road from Peoria to Galena\, Illinois.  He and his wife live in Walnut\, Illinois.
